Dog’s Trust Visit
Throughout the day, children across school had a visit from a lady named Lauren from the Dog’s Trust. She went into each of the classes and spoke to the children about being safe around dogs. The children learnt that in order to treat a dog well they would need to respect their space and feelings. The children also talked about how to greet a dog and to make sure they felt comfortable around a stranger.
Dogs show all different signs of body language that can be positive of negative. If a dog growls, barks or bites it normally means that they feel threatened and uncomfortable. When a dog eats food it normally likes to be left alone and doesn’t want to be disturbed.
Lauren taught us:
- that we shouldn’t approach a dog who is tied up outside buildings as they might be nervous
- that we should always check with the dog’s owner before stroking it
- how to be a responsible dog owner
- how to stay safe around dogs
Dogs Trust believe that by educating young people about the commitment involved in owning a dog and about staying safe around dogs, they can help them to become more responsible members of their local community, as well as positively impact their behaviour in the interests of canine welfare.
Lauren was extremely impressed with how we all behaved and even told Mr. Y that we were the best school that she had been to since starting to do these visits in September.
