Music
The national plan for music education sets out the government’s vision to enable all children and young people in England to:
- learn to sing, play an instrument and create music together
- have the opportunity to progress their musical interests and talents, including professionally
You can read more about the rationale for this here.
The Brodetsky Primary School Music Development Plan sets out how we will achieve this vision, emphasising the importance of partnerships between education settings, music hubs, music organisations working with young people and the music industry.
Intent:
At Brodetsky we value music because it is the most powerful and unique form of communication that can change and impact the way children feel, think and act. We believe that teaching music helps the body and the mind work together. Exposing children to music during early development helps them to learn the sounds and meanings of words. Dancing to music helps children build motor skills while allowing them to practice self-expression. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to develop their musical potential and we aim to nurture and encourage musical development across the school, through our secular and LK lessons.
Implementation:
- We teach Music for 30 minutes each week in a whole class setting.
- We have a variety of musical instruments ranging from percussion, ukuleles, recorders and Boom whackers. We also have two pianos and can borrow keyboards from the High School occasionally.
- We have regular daily assemblies which are extremely music orientated. The children sing Hebrew prayers daily in assembly and in class. During Jewish festivals, the children sing Jewish songs every day in their Jewish studies lessons and during daily assemblies.
- Children take part in daily whole school and whole class singing. There is also a Brodetsky choir which takes place every week for Key Stage 2 children. Before covid, the choir had taken part in many community events and will continue to do this post covid.
- The Music curriculum is now topic based; each year group will learn about different composers linked to a piece of music which relates to their topic at times throughout the year.
- Each year group will also have their own Music terminology to learn/experiment with.
- On top of this, each year we choose one piece of music/song that each class will learn, create and perform. (Linked to British values or Israel.)
Impact:
Music will be monitored by the Music subject lead deep diving into the subject via learning walks, checking planning, lesson observations and monitoring Seesaw where evidence of lessons will be found. The Music subject lead will also perform teacher and pupil voices to monitor the children’s understanding and enjoyment of Music.
We will celebrate Music during daily, weekly and Jewish festival assemblies. We will perform at various community/school events as the Brodetsky choir which will celebrate our love of Music. The children will perform songs they have learnt or Music topics they have learnt via class assemblies to parents/carers. We will celebrate our love of learning Jewish songs through our large scale Jewish festival events, such as the Passover Seder and Chanukah celebrations. Every year the children will celebrate Music through our House Music Competition which includes solo singing, ensemble singing, solo instrumental and a whole House song/performance.
